What it feels like

A gift they will unwrap slowly.
Hold for a moment before they can speak.

She found our wedding night sky at the bottom of her stocking. She went very quiet. Then she said “how did you even know to do this.” That was enough.

I gave my father the sky on the night I was born. He’s 71. He told me he’d never received a gift that made him feel like that moment was worth keeping.

When Mum passed, we chose the night she was born. It’s on the wall now. There aren’t many things that hold grief and beauty at the same time.

The Gift

Not a print. A moment preserved.

The sky doesn’t
forget.

Every star was in a precise position on the night that mattered to you. Our astronomy engine calculates that exact sky — accurate to the minute, to your latitude and longitude, anywhere on earth and at any point in recorded history.

This is not a generic star map. It is a document of a real night. A gift that says: I know this moment mattered. And I wanted it to last.

Precise to the minute

Real astronomical calculations — the same stars, same positions, same sky. Not a template. Not approximate.

Any location on earth

Queenstown, London, a hospital in Auckland, a beach in Northland — wherever the moment happened, your sky is there.

Questions

Everything you need to know.

What makes an EMBER Night Sky map different from other star maps?
EMBER Night Sky maps use real astronomical calculations to show the precise position of every star at your exact location, date, and time. Most star map services use approximate templates. Ours is computed for your specific latitude, longitude, hour, and minute. The sky on your map is the actual sky that existed that night.
How accurate is the night sky on the print?
Very. EMBER’s star positions come from the Yale Bright Star Catalog (BSC5) — the same astronomical reference Stellarium and other professional star map tools use, originally compiled from Hipparcos satellite measurements. Planetary positions are calculated from IAU Standish J2000 Keplerian orbital elements, with the equation of center applied so the planets render where they actually were — not where a circular-orbit approximation would put them. Up to 8,400 individual stars to magnitude 6.5 (the naked-eye limit in dark skies), plus all 7 planets visible above the horizon at the moment. If you compare your print to a professional star app at the same moment, the same constellations, bright stars and planets sit in the same place.
What occasions is a Night Sky map suited to?
Night Sky maps work for almost any occasion where a specific moment matters: anniversaries, weddings, the birth of a child, birthdays (especially milestone ages like 30, 40, or 50), graduations, engagements, retirements, Matariki, Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and memorial gifts. The most meaningful versions are made for the night everything changed.
Can I choose any date and location in history?
Yes. Any date, any time, any location on earth. You can map the sky above a hospital in Auckland in 1989, a beach in Northland on New Year’s Eve, or a street in London thirty years ago. Enter the date, time, and place and your sky appears in real time as you design it.
How long does it take to receive a Night Sky print?
Designing takes around 5–10 minutes in the interactive designer — no account required. Once ordered, prints are produced at full resolution in Aotearoa and shipped flat. Delivery anywhere in New Zealand typically takes 7–10 business days from order to door (5–7 days production + 2–3 days NZ shipping).
What print mediums are available?
Seven options: Fine Art Paper (archival matte, from $49), Canvas (gallery-wrapped on pine frame, from $89), HD Metal (aluminium panel, from $129), Acrylic Block (6mm clear, from $115), Night Sky Puzzle (150 or 300 pieces, from $89), Framed Print (Classic timber moulding with standard glass in White, Black or Raw oak, from $120), and a Digital file (from $55) emailed to you to print at home. For a gift that arrives ready to hang, the Framed Print. For something that stands alone, Metal or Acrylic. For something experiential, the Puzzle. For instant delivery, the Digital file.
Can I get the Night Sky print framed and ready to hang?
Yes. Choose “Framed Print” in the designer and your sky arrives mounted in a Classic timber moulding with standard glass — ready to hang the moment it’s unwrapped. Available in four sizes (A4 $120, A3 $185, A2 $250, A1 $430) and three frame colours: White, Black, or Raw oak. The print itself is the same archival fine art paper used for our Fine Art option, and the frame is professionally assembled in Aotearoa. Production takes 7–10 business days plus 2–3 days NZ delivery. The framed option is ideal for housewarming, wedding, anniversary, or new baby gifts — particularly when sending the print to someone who would never frame it themselves.
Can I just buy the digital file and print it myself?
Yes. Choose “Digital file” in the designer and you’ll receive an A3 print-ready PDF by email within 24 hours of ordering for $55. It prints beautifully at A3 (297 × 420 mm) on any inkjet or laser printer that handles A3, and downsizes cleanly to A4 if you choose “Fit to page” at print time. You can also take the file to Warehouse Stationery, Officeworks, or any local print shop. The link is valid for 30 days — save the file somewhere safe and you can re-print as many copies as you like for personal use.
Is this a good gift for someone who is hard to buy for?
Yes — it’s one of the few gifts genuinely personalised to a specific moment rather than general taste. Because it requires knowing something real about the recipient, it communicates thought and care that generic gifts cannot. It is particularly suited to people who are difficult to buy for, because it gives them something they cannot buy themselves.

"I gave my husband a star map of the night we got married for our 10th anniversary. He's a man of few words and even he was quiet for a moment. It's framed above our bed now. Best gift I've ever given him."

"I had one made of the night my mum passed. The Southern Cross above her hospital in Christchurch. I cried when I opened the tube. It's a way to hold a moment I never thought I could hold. Thank you EMBER."
